Confabulations was a multi-year project by Diederik Peeters, driven by a fascination with the human tendency to turn everything into a story — especially when reality becomes unclear. Drawing on the history of psychiatry, personal anecdotes and popular culture, the project explored how ideas of normality, deviation and mental health emerge, shift and occasionally go off the rails.
Like his previous project Apparitions, Confabulations was developed as a trajectory of modules: smaller, autonomous works organised around the same thematic core. Each module took a different form — from sung lectures to audio fiction, from visual performances to workshops or games — and was presented in a range of contexts and through changing collaborations. The project was formally concluded with the performance Confabulations, which premiered in November 2025 at Schauspiel Leipzig (DE).
